I have never been there, but she has always wanted me to come for a visit.  At 95 I guess if I'm going I should.

You are a long way from me, west coast of Michigan.  My 95 year old aunt lives in Mr. Vernon.

Greg was referring to the cartridge in the tone arm, if defective they will produce a horrible screeching sound.  I am more concerned that you got zapped touching under there.  Zapped like 110 volt zapped?

Cabinets, Cloth, Finishes / Re: Magnavox Cabinet Upkeep

If your cabinet looks as good in person as your photos a little furniture polish is all you need.  I like Guardsman Furniture Polish.  They make several products including a wood cleaner.  I purchase mine at my local ACE Hardware store.  Howards is another product that is recommended here on the forum.  I personally have never used it, I guess I'm just stuck on Guardsman.

As far as your cabinet goes, do you have any photos you can post so we can see what it looks like.  There are several products that you can use for specific problems.  Photos and a description will help.

I agree, I hope it gets transferred to the downloads section.

Congrats Greg!  I am very happy with your success so far.  Great photos, Bob would be proud.  ;)  It's neat for me to see it apart as I only saw it together with all the dirt and nicotine stains.  :)  It's going to beautiful when done.  I'm also happy that you are sharing your discoveries, procedures, and outcomes.  I think we are all looking forward to your next steps in your "Gloriously Complicated" journey.  Please keep the documentation and photos coming.

If you alter/swell/change the idler rubber I will affect the speed.  Listening to vocals may leave you with Alvin and the Chipmunks.  I have that with my RCA 45 player.  It needs a new idler, I just have not ordered one yet.

Sorry, I guess wrong on the tubes.  It's a newer model than I thought.

I would try sanding the rubber first.  Be careful not to create a flat spot as you sand.  I sand by rolling the rubber on the sandpaper (like a tire running on the road) light pressure only.  Black will start to appear on the sandpaper and the rubber on the idler will have a flat black look instead of shinny.  Also be sure to clean the surface that the idler contacts on the platter. I use rubbing alcohol.  I have good luck with this method.   :)

Set yourself up with an account and log in.  Lot's of info that will help with that decision.

$30.00 is a steal.  That was one of RCA's higher end units.  That might have 4 6v6 push pull.

Grease job and oil change and I new idler will do wonders. The idler tire is probably like cement.

Again congrats are in order Greg.  This is a huge step in the right direction considering it is "Gloriously Complicated."  :)  With 20 minutes of run time, and probably longer by now, without smoke it should be ok. It's amazing what baby steps and a few parts can accomplish.  ;)
