Grill cloth suppliers...... where did they all go?
« on: September 11, 2015, 04:27:13 PM »
I'm looking for some replacement grill cloth for an old Zenith console.  Something with 1" or 2" diamonds in some form of red/maroon/burgundy.....etc..    I'm finding nothing but tight patterns made for table radios and guitar amps left out there.  A few 'google searches' and I quickly discover the entire industry has seeming started to vanish.  Heck, Radio Daze has all it's swatches able to fit on a single page!  I find myself looking at my grandmothers old bed quilts for a decent pattern!

Anyone got any decent suppliers in their list that they can share?   Anyone know how to knit?

Nice swatches but they appear to be more towards amplifier and modern applications.  Hoping to find a Wide pattern to cover the speaker grills on an early 50's console.

Well, when the going gets tough....the tough go to ..........  Joanne Fabrics ?   :o :o

What can I say, it was closer than any swatch I could find online to the original grill cloth.  40% off reg and half off that price because I found a remnant......  sinfully cheap and looking really good.

JoAnn fabric and similar places have LOTS of selection but that is an exceptionally good example there.
Often, there is better selection for our types of use in the  remnants section  8).

I got a more brownish thick fabric - with a square gold cross-hatch, turnt it 45 degrees for a '46 Sparton console. It was not much like the old pattern (compared to an unexposed section) but period correct like your example, looking better than original.
Variations of gold with waves/diamonds are what I am usually looking for.

The big diamond patterns seem extinct. I felt like i discovered gold when i found this swatch. I was starting to consider brass screening over burgundy cloth...but...try to find that stuff for less than a.mortgage payment per foot. :P

I really like the samples on this site.  I'm struggling to make up my mind, actually.

Guitar amp suppliers have the kind of plastic cloth these sets need.  I bought new cloth for my 1958 Magnavox Berkshire from a guitar supplier.
