I need help with my SO31 Magnavox speaker cabinet
« on: April 15, 2017, 04:16:37 PM »

I'm in need of a picture of a powered Magnavox SO31 speaker cabinet. I have one, but the previous owner decided to play technician with the L-pad.

The cabinet houses a 179 mono amp.

I have enclosed picture.

My question is, is the l-pad stock?

If so, how is this thing wired?

Currently, when powering it up one of the 6V6's is looks like a plasma ball. It tests great still but speaker is just static.
Loud and Vintage.... any questions?

When you say, "looks like  plasma ball," turn it off pronto and start replacing coupling caps.  You've got a tube with grid bias way off, allowing too much current flowing.  The tube won't test good for very long under those conditions.  Long ago I found a nice Harmony guitar amp with P-P 6V6s.   Turned it on; the plates glowed a gentle orange.  Oops.  Replaced caps, tried again, AOK.  And on another curbside find, a Sansui 1000A, one of the brand-new and very pricey output tubes had self-destructed because of failed oil caps.

Mine is a slightly different model (SO-37) but perhaps these photo's will help.

FWIW I have not really looked at mine all that closely and unfortunately it's not in a spot where I have easy access to it at the moment.

well, before I get laughed at..... I think I have solved the issue..

would you believe that during the recap, I had pushed a resistor over to make room and never put it back?

Yeah, see this is not good and with those two wires touching.. not good.

let's just say I got lucky.

anyway, we will be testing this weekend, so yeah, I'll try to blow it up

Loud and Vintage.... any questions?

The only person who never makes a mistake is a person that does nothing.  Glad you got it figured out.

I have a so31 as well it came with my 58 continetial. has the amp179 just like yours ,, yes mine also has the L-pad top rearside corner, it also controls the on off of the unit .and right now its in storage. pic next to another speaker only cabinet, I added the little amp 135 so its just for reference , also my horn in the so31 was blown so I stuck the green cap horn from a later astrosonic in for time being. mine also has the stereo conversion kit installed into my continental but weird thing is it has a stereo tuner but amp150 mono power amp. plus the so-31 with the like amp179. pretty interesting find.

I've owned a powered and unpowered extension speaker and both had the high frequency attentuator/Lpad.

I did just acquire an S-43 Concert grand/Imperial extension speaker
(just one unfortunately) that has the heavier magnet like an Imperial/CG and
it does NOT have an attenuator. So theres that.
