Magnavox Berkeley Acquired!
« on: April 30, 2017, 11:09:40 PM »
Well, it's been a long time! I hope all the members are doing well.  :D

I have been very busy with college as of late and kicking some projects through the door, however I went to the Iowa Antique Radio Club's auction yesterday and saw something i've been searching for 2 1/2 years, a brass faced Magnavox Berkeley!

It has a nice set of push pull 6L6's in it, two 12" speakers, and the optional FM tuner that comes with a story!
After I purchased the berkeley for a measly $25 a gentlemen asked if I was going to keep it, with a delighted yes he told me that he had the optional FM tuner that he'd be happy to give me, which he did and I was very grateful for.

So now I have a beautiful brass faced model, I can now rest easy!  ;D

Beautiful Unit!  They Sound great when restored and the AM/SW receivers are great DX performers.

I forgot and this maybe a dumb question, but where does the optional FM tuner mount?

Next is replacing all the paper/plastic capacitors and electrolytics in the power supply. I've went over the schematic, and besides an odd looking design in the preamp stage, looks like a really solidly designed high performance unit. So I doubt I'll be "tinkering" with it like I did with my biamp units. So just looks like a typical replace parts type jobber. I check some of the resistors and they all looked solid, Magnavox did a much better job sourcing parts in their earlier units then some of the later units where I'd have to replace every single passive component in there.

The FM tuner mounts where that flat piece of brass is above the dial. I don't know how it exactly goes on, so if anyone has any insight as to how to mount it, be it a brochure or walk through, i'd be more than grateful.

The chassis is mounted inverted to another mounting plate above like the one your radio is mounted on.. Check to see if one is up there.  If not that may be another item to acquire.

The FM tuner seems to be mounted to a plate already, so that's most likely what you're talking about. Having a fuss of a time getting it off.

The plate should slide off the chassis forward after removing the 2 retaining bolts at the chassis rear.

I'll have to give that a go, it's probably just stuck.
