My Clairtone S-301, The Countess
« on: November 03, 2017, 12:30:11 AM »
I wanted to share my Daily Driver, the Clairtone S-301 Countess, wonderful little console, EMI speakers, and I changed the non functional turntable with a Dual 1224, it sounds great, and is a perfect fit in the living room.

The original changer looked like  a Garrard Type A.  Now you've got the Dual... I assume the Clairtone has a preamp for the magnetic cartridge?  I don't know much about Clairtone.

it did have a garrard when it came to me, but it was in really really bad shape, some one "attempted" to fix it and caused more damage than it was worth fixing, so I put in my Dual 1225, it does have an ACOS M6 cart that sounds pretty good, and I am using a pyle preamp to get the signal up to snuff for the amplifier.

I updated the TurnTable in the console, I picked up a Elac Miracord 50H for next to nothing, cleaned it up, put a new shure m92 in it and.... it sounds way better than that tired ACOS M6. Still have to stain the new plinth, but so far, pretty happy with it. Also need to sort the rumble I am getting when its turned up.

One of the classic limitations of consoles is low-frequency acoustic feedback.  Any way that's what you're hearing?

No acustic feedback at all, the 12 inch platter and large heavy frame of this turntable, along with the 3/4 inch plinth take care of that, it is very much from the motor, or idler, when the platter isn't spinning, you get no sound at all, unless you touch the stylus with the cleaning brush... So far, very happy, only hear the bit of rumble if i have it turned way up.

Very nice. ELAC was used in "President" models of Fishers of the early 1960s, right?

I am not sure what was in the fishers, but i do know that i love this 50H, and i was wrong about the feedback, i do get just a bit when i turn it up.
