Need Info on this G.E. Console.....
« on: February 03, 2018, 02:57:56 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Can anyone out there tell me the model number of this G.E. console or anything about it? I've owned numerous console over the last six years but not a G.E. product. The cabinetry on this thing is beautiful, I'd put the craftsmanship right up there with Drexel, and the Fishers products. I'd like to know if this was totl for G.E. It has sealed speaker compartments and the doors in front actually open. I didn't get a chance to listen to it although they said it does work. Anyway any info would be appreciated.

I would say this was TOTL for GE circa 1967. They do sound great but the rocker switches and controls need a good and gentle cleaning before you'll know how it sounds. Porta-fi was an RF wireless-linked external speaker set GE offered.

The record changer is custom made for GE, so the parts may be less easily found than V-M, and Magnavox.  I saw this model at a estate-consignment shop, listed for $399.

No but I bet someone here does. It was not V-M like many and the few by Crescent that Silvertone used.

GE record changers were made by GE.  GE bought out Glaser Steers in the early 1960s, simplified / cheapened the Glaser Steers design, and the GE record changer was born.

Thanks Ken, now I learned something - GS was a good one, like VM.

Ok, now I need to learn.....what companies used the Glaser-Steers? Unless they look a lot like VM or Crescent I can't say I have ever seen one.

Very cool the way the turntable rotation stops as the record falls.  How is the rumble/wow performance?

I have seen GS changers in early stereo Philco and Dumont/Emerson consoles. I know other console makers offered them.
