Thinking about another Magnavox purchase
« on: July 31, 2018, 09:21:29 AM »
I think I'm becoming obsessed with these vintage consoles.
I'm considering another purchase and would appreciate some advice if this cabinet is worthwhile. I haven't seen anything like this which may be a good or bad thing.
$45 but an hour drive.

It has FM, which is a plus.  The front bezel is buggered up, which would be a huge negative to me.  Basically a parts set.  The cabinet would be easier to fix than the bezel.  Good luck.

Electra225,
Do you think there is any possibility the transformer in this unit would replace the one that blew up in my earlier post?

Parts manuals for both sets will give transformer specs.  Compare those to be sure.

I have a similar model from a couple years later--slightly different bezel, and--please note this--it lacks the cool features activated by the to left-most knobs.  One says "sharp tune, which I assume gives two AM bandwidths (one for selectivity and DX, one for local, higher fidelity).  The other knob has a "full range" option, maybe bypassing the tone controls???

If it's the same radio as mine, with some minor modifications, then it will have a P-P 6V6 output.  I sure wouldn't want to scavenge a power transformer from such an interesting and potentially fun device.

I'm going to go pick it up today. I don't think I can go wrong for $45.
I'm hoping the radio bezel is just dirty, but unlikely.
I'll post my findings when I get it home.

I like the oldies and someday I hope to find something similar to what you are going after.  Does it just play 78's?

Here you go, Bill.  You could stop by Branson on the way.  You could knock that off your bucket list.  Maybe do a little fishing in the Ozarks.  Visit the Stereo Theater on the way back...... ;)

It looks good Greg, but probably won't be there when I head west.  ;)

Is this a model you would be interested in?

That's a very handsome device, and it probably offers superior AM band performance.

Greg!

Thank you, but not at this time.  That's kind of what I'm looking for but I have not really decided what of that era I really want.  I found a Philco about a year ago that was their top of the line.  Beautiful cabinet lots of electronics, twin speakers, the works.  The only hold back was the $300.00 they wanted for it.  They still have it, I see it reappear on Craig's List off and on.

The cabinet on that one is nice, but is one of the plainer styles.  Those older Magnavox instruments are fairly plentiful in this part of the country.  I'll keep one eye open if you'd like.  Using both eyes makes me hunt too hard for one.   ;)
