Zenith Record Player Console. Not sure what model/
« on: August 25, 2018, 03:37:39 PM »
My latest find.  According to the guy who had it for sale, "It sounds bad, like something is wrong with it."

The price was almost free, so I drove the 25 miles and picked it up.

Cabinet is in pretty good shape.  A touch of static when turning the bass control.  I put on a record and yes, it did sound pretty bad.

I figured out what was "wrong with it".   I flipped the needle over. BAM!  It was magic.  Sounds great now. It's amazing that he never did that.  There's not a thing wrong with it.  One of the wires to one of the speakers was dangling, so I plugged it back in.  BAM!  It sounds even better than at first.

I don't know what this model is called. Maybe a "Cantata"?

I had one very much like this one many years ago, but with the AM/FM radio included.  The bass response was absolutely stunning!

I don't know what the model number is, but that is a handsome instrument!  You don't often find them in that good of condition.  Nice score!   :)

It sounds good, but I wouldn't call the bass response "stunning".  I need to have the bass turned almost all the way up to get what I consider decent bass. No boom, just good warm and cozy.

I wonder if getting new tubes would have any benefit?

New capacitors might have more effect on bass response than new tubes would.  Cathode bypass capacitors and cathode bias resistor condition play a big part in bass response.

I unplugged the turntable and plugged in my Bluetooth receiver. I'm streaming music from my laptop.  Gotta love a phono jack!!

Not too be gloomy Gus but.  It may sound good now but if a capacitor fails and stakes out the power transformer you could be In trouble.  Speaking for my self and hopefully all of us here on the forum, please recap!   :)

It will get recapped.  Or maybe turned into a liquor cabinet.

Is there a good replacement for the electrostatic tweeters?  These don't work, like most EST's that are this old.

I have the tar bucket, anybody else got some chickens that need plucked?   ;)

Just kidding...... ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

He got you, Bill.  Scroll down the page.  He got me, too.... ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

To answer the question about electrostatic tweeters.  You can replace them with regular old cone speakers/tweeters.  You may have to modify the caps in the crossover networks to get them to sound like you like.  Many people think those stereos sound fine without the EST's working.  No harm done either way.  Good luck.

It sounded fine without them working.  I had to put an ear right up to them to even know they weren't.

The easiest and the best way to make a Zenith sound better is to trade it for a Magnavox.   ;)

For the short time I listened to it, it sounded pretty good. With a nice wide mono "soundstage" for lack of a better term.

Two 6V6's in a PP mono amp SHOULD sound great no matter what brand it is.

I'm sure after you do a good tune-up (they ALL need that) it will be a sweetheart.  One you can be proud to own.  Keep us informed of your progress.
