Voice of Music 1296

Another curb find... VM model 1296 table top set with AM radio and phono... this had the option of another powered speaker to make it stereo and you could order optional legs to make it a floor stander. Gary at VM said he did not have any leg kits for these, so I went to the local Menards and put my own on...

I have the same Philco, at least the cabinet look, as the one on the right.  Someday I hope to find a VM like I had when I was in my late teens, early twenties.  I can't remember the model off the top of my head, similar to your new find Elton, but a older model.  I would also like to find a high end VM console someday.  You would think living in Michigan, the place VM was built, you would find lots of them around.  NOPE, at least I don't see any.

Bill I agree, VM equipment is few and far between in its home state... I see most consoles are out on the coasts... I have seen a few listed in California.. would love a top of the line VM console...and that philco was my very first radio I got ... back when I was a teenager... model 42-380.

I used to regard Philcos as the Chevrolets of radios--common and not too elevated.  But they perform well, and as some may have noticed, my vehicles are Chevies and Fords.  I've got two Philco consoles from 1942_  42-390 and 42-395.

I found mine quite by accident.

Since that time I have been actively searching for them and have found a grand total of 3 more TOTL models in about 5 years. One on ebay (a 59 I think) another was a 59 located in a vintage shop in Tucson and the other was a 1960 model at an estate sale in Lake Tahoe. Both were quite a bit more than the $100 I paid for mine.

As a kid, I knew two people who had V-M 560A consolettes--one the blond version, the other mahogany.  Wish I knew what happened to them.  I recall that they sounded pretty good for table-top devices.

My Philco is model 41-280, and it's on the bench right now.  I started it 6 months ago with electrolytic recap and discovered I needed a tube.  A friend provided me with the tube, but I did not get back to bench time until now.  I also need to do some cabinet work on it.

I would love to have Ken's VM. ;D  That thing must sound amazing!  :)  Growing up one of my parents friends had a VM console.  I have tried to find the model on Gary's site but no luck.  It must be one of those that won't open.  I do remember it had the tuner, and I could see the outline of the speakers.  There were six, with the woofers being 12".  I also remember, and I don't know why, I saw it away from the wall once and I could see in through the holes on the back cover.  The amp was in the bottom of the cabinet.  I think it was an upper end model.

I looked up on Gary's site the one I had when I was a kid, it was a VM 560, in mahogany.  My aunt and uncle gave it too me, I wish I still had it.  I also came across a VM portable that I picked up about a year ago.  It's VM 556 from 1954.  It's had a rebuild and really sound good for what it is.  I listen to it often.   :)

Out in my shop there's a 361 minus speakers that I got free at a garage sale down the alley a couple years ago.  And somewhere off in storage I've got a 151 0r 155 to work on some day.  A favorite portable is an old mono Emerson 820B.  It has an amp with 35L6s in push-pull and two side-firing 6" speakers.  The V-M connection is the changer.  The original cartridge had been replaced by a nice Sonotone stereo cartridge by the time it came into my hands.  I used to haul this off to work with me when I was a student with a late-night on-campus job.  It came to me with an aux. input so sometimes I'd haul my Sony 350 tape deck too and plug it in.  There are advantages to working at night.  I need to drag that Emerson out of storage, grease up the changer, and recap the amp .  It was humming the last time I tried it.

I just peeked--somebody has one on eBay with a buy-it-now price of $799 (!!!!).  If anybody wants mine for $799, I'll deliver it in person!  But you can see the photos for free:
