Simple answer:  don't turn the set on and the tubes will last forever. ;D

I just read nearly the entire book and it is very informative. As I suspected, the fabled mutual conductance tube testers are ok but not better than good emission testers. Rumors to the contrary are perhaps Hokum.

Only reason I bring this up is I had a very nice Hickok tester that didn't work as well as my Jackson 648. The readings were not as consistent and often underrated my tubes performance. I sold it on eBay at a tidy profit and enjoy my accurate and steady Jackson much more.

I had a Hickok also, but it was too difficult to set up and use for each individual tube, so I sold it.  I will just stick with my Heathkit tube tester, which works just fine for my purposes.
